Tax Appointment Checklist​

As we come into the last few weeks of tax season, many people might be scrambling to get the needed information to make sure their taxes are completed and filed by the April 18 deadline. To make things easier for both yourself (and smoother for your accountant), here’s an initial checklist of information that would be beneficial to have on hand.

While certainly not an exhaustive list (contact us for more details), having this information will help make the tax-prep process run smoother:


Personal Information:

  • Social security numbers for everyone in the family (spouse, dependents, etc.)
  • The last 3-4 years of Federal and State income tax returns
  • Banking information (routing and account numbers for direct deposit of potential refunds)



  • Employment and Self-employment forms (W-2s, 1099-Misc for self-employment income, profit & loss statements showing business expenses)
  • IRA/401K/Pension information (Form 1099-R(s) for distributions, IRA account summaries, contribution records)
  • Social Security benefit information (Form SSA-1099)
  • Interest, dividends and capital gains
  • Property-related income (rental property income, income from the sale of properties)
  • Miscellaneous income (tax refunds, unemployment alimony, gambling/lottery winnings, etc.)


Income Adjustments:

  • IRA contributions and/or other self-employed pension plans
  • College Tuition
  • Student Loan interest
  • Medical Savings Account Contributions
  • Moving Expenses
  • Self-employed health insurance


Itemized Deductions:

  • Mortgage interest
  • Real estate taxes
  • State and local income taxes
  • Personal property taxes
  • Medical expenses
  • Charitable donations (cash and non-cash)
  • Job expenses (gifts to clients, supplies, mileage, licenses and continuing education, travel expenses, etc.
  • Job search expenses
  • Home office expenses (square footage of your home office, rent or mortgage paid, property tax, insurance premiums, utility bills, etc.)


Tax Credits:

  • Childcare costs
  • Higher education tax credits
  • Energy-saving purchases
